/Every newborn session you’ll find me lugging all of these into every home. At the time of writing this, I don’t have a studio so my newborn sessions are always in-home. I bring these props and gear to every session to make it feel like it were taken in a studio. See below for my Top 10 Favorite Newborn Photography Gear Purchases.
Top 10 Favorite Newborn Photography Gear Purchases
Newborn Stretch Wrap for swaddling. I usually wrap them in this first and then use another solid color wrap to go over it. Think of this wrap as the foundation of the swaddle to keep their arms and legs in place.
Stretchy Swaddle. This is the type of swaddle/material I use to swaddle over the mesh swaddle you see above. It helps keep everything in place and photographs well.
Baby Shusher. This one is to drown out any noise and keep baby sleeping or relaxed. I keep this on me or nearby baby pretty much the entire session.
Newborn Outfit. This outfit and hat looks adorable together and is very popular for baby boys. You could order in multiple colors or pick a gender neutral color and have the baby girls wear a bow. I usually keep baby in an outfit when photographing lifestyle images.
Camera Holster. This is much safer than using a harness when photographing newborns because the harness may swing unexpectedly. Baby’s safety is the priority during a newborn session. Using this holster is also so much more convenient when you’re constantly adjusting, positioning, and posing the baby.
Stretchy Fabric. This is used as a neutral background when posing baby by themselves. Place this over a couch cushion or a few layers of blankets and use the clips below to secure it in place. You can also head to your local fabric store to grab this.
Clips. These are for keeping the stretchy fabric in place so it stays smooth. Hopefully this means less editing in Photoshop to get those creases out! This helps give your images a studio feel no matter where you’re taking them.
Fur fabric. This is to help stylize when doing shots of the baby by themselves. I like to first use a piece of stretchy fabric and put it over a lot of blankets or a soft couch cushion. Then you can add this fabric and place baby on top. Try some shots with and without so you get more variety for the final gallery. You can also head to your local fabric store to grab this.
Wicker Moses Basket. Place the fur fabric in the Moses basket and photograph baby laying on top of fabric. The Moses basket photographs so beautifully. It really takes your newborn photos to the next level and makes them look more luxurious.
Posing blocks. These are used underneath the fabric and blankets to help pose the baby. They don’t have photos of the actual blocks on the website (it’s a yoga block material), I think this is to keep it proprietary. I purchased this exact set and use it at every newborn session. Not an affiliate link, just sharing because it’s what I actually use.
